Troubleshooting
Fixes for the problems people run into most.
I get 401 Invalid API key
- Send the key in the
x-api-keyheader.Authorization: Bearerdoesn't work for API keys. - Check for spaces or a cut-off key when you pasted it.
- Make sure the key is still Active in API keys. Revoked keys return
401.
I get 403 from Python
Python's built-in urllib sends a User-Agent that's currently refused. Use requests or httpx, or set your own User-Agent header.
I get 429
You're over your limit.
- With a key: your daily quota is used up. It resets at 00:00 UTC, and
Retry-Aftertells you how many seconds that is. Upgrade in Billing for a bigger quota. - Without a key: you made more than 30 lookups in a minute from the same IP, and it's blocked for two hours. Use a key.
See Rate limits.
I get 400 Invalid IP address format
The path must be a valid IPv4 or IPv6 address: /v1/lookup/8.8.8.8. Check for spaces, ports (1.2.3.4:443) or brackets around IPv6 addresses.
The first lookup of an address is slow
An address we've never seen is classified live before we answer, which takes up to about 2.5 seconds. Later lookups of the same address answer in about a millisecond.
A field says "none"
That's how the API says "no value". It never returns null. Numbers with no value are 0. See Response format.
The location looks wrong
IP location is approximate. Country is the most reliable part. VPNs, proxies and privacy relays show the location of their server, not the person using them. Check detection to see if the address is one of those.
My usage doesn't match my own count
The dashboard counts every request made with your key, including ones that failed or went over the limit. Lookups you run on the dashboard's IP lookup page count too.
